Old pieces of furniture from the 1950s often darken due to the old shellac or lacquer finish. It is easy to remove the old shellac or lacquer finish using a furniture refinisher such as Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher. Simply pour the refinisher into a shallow bowl, and dip either a piece of steel wool or a synthetic scrubbing pad into the bowl. Working on a small section at a time, gently scrub off the old finish. The furniture refinisher will soften the finish, and the pad will soak it up. Take a clean cloth, dip it in the refinisher for a final wipe down. After the wood furniture dries, give it a light sanding with number 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the wood. You can now apply both color and protection at the same time with Minwax PolyShades, one-step stain and finish. Apply Minwax PolyShades with a natural bristle brush with fine tips on the end. It is important to apply Minwax PolyShades in thin coats to avoid runs and drips. Chances are you will only need one coat because you are applying stain, color, and protection at the same time.
