Dining Room Chairs – The Backs Make the Chairs
Go to any furniture store and look for wood dining room chairs. It does not
matter if the store is local or online. You will find that most wood dining
chairs are identified by the type of back they have. You have a wide choice of
styles to choose.
Arrowhead Back chairs are a popular style of wood dining room chairs. The back
does not actually come to a point. Instead, it eases into a vague impression of
an arrowhead shape. It has spindles that angle into the design of the chair back
to enhance the illusion of the shape. Most Arrow Back chairs are fairly short
and have wide seats.
Mission Back chairs have become more common as the Southwest style has come into
focus. They have an upper bar with squared-off narrow vertical bars, just like
any mission furniture has. They are usually made of good solid wood such as oak
or cherry.
A similar style of wood dining room chairs is the Slat Back chairs. The
difference is that instead of all thin vertical bars, they only have two outer
thin vertical bars. In the center of the back, there is a solid rectangular
vertical piece that may be as much as six inches or wider. Slat Back chairs were
more common in decades past, but they are still appealing.
Another tried and true type of wood dining room chairs is the Ladder Back
Chairs. These chairs look just as the name would imply. In between the two posts
of the chairs are multiple horizontal bars. These may be curved upward or simply
rounded back. The chairs can be made even more comfortable with tied-on
cushions.
Cross Back chairs are a rarer form of wood dining room chairs. They have an
upper and lower bar attaching to the posts on either side. Then they have a
small bar going from the upper left corner to the lower right corner, and vice
versa. They are not new, but they fit in with modern décor, especially if they
are done in a very dark or black finish.
Pressed Back chairs have been a staple for years and years. There are many fine
examples of antique Pressed Back chairs. These chairs have a uniquely shaped
back. They have many curves in the solid design. To make them even better, they
have designs stamped into the wood on the backs of these wood dining room
chairs.
French Back wood dining room chairs have a more romantic appeal. They are all
curves and smooth, polished wood. They may be a newer version of the French
Balloon Back chairs that were popular in the 1800s. However, those chairs are
out of the price ranges of most homeowners. The newer French Back chairs are
more affordable.
